Joel Embiid, the reigning MVP and Philadelphia 76ers’ star player, is facing a potential hurdle in his bid for back-to-back MVP awards. With the implementation of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) starting the 2023–24 season, players are required to participate in a minimum of 65 games to be eligible for various regular-season awards, including the coveted MVP title.

Unfortunately for Embiid, who has already missed seven games this season, recent reports indicate that he will be sidelined for the upcoming game against the Chicago Bulls, adding to his absence. If the Sixers’ center misses more than 11 games in total, he will be disqualified from MVP contention under the new CBA regulations.

Embiid’s candidacy for MVP seemed strong, with impressive statistics averaging 35.0 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game. The Sixers, currently standing in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 22-9 record, rely heavily on Embiid’s stellar performances.

However, there is a strategic perspective to consider. According to insights from a Sixers insider, Embiid’s potential absence in the upcoming games could be a deliberate move to manage his workload and ensure he is well-rested for the playoffs.

By strategically resting him for the required additional 10 games, the Sixers aim to optimize Embiid’s performance in crucial postseason matchups, prioritizing the team’s championship aspirations over individual accolades. This calculated decision underscores the delicate balance teams must strike between individual honors and long-term team success in the NBA.

History Does Not Favor Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid’s quest for back-to-back MVP awards faces a significant challenge due to his injury history. Despite being a phenomenal player and an elite scorer, Joel Embiid has struggled with durability throughout his career. He has played over 65 games in a season only twice, and those instances occurred in the last two seasons.

His injury-prone nature raises concerns about his MVP aspirations, given the new requirement in the collective bargaining agreement that players must participate in a minimum of 65 games to be eligible for the award.

Already missing the Chicago Bulls game and reports indicating potential continued absence due to an ankle injury, Embiid finds himself in a precarious position. With only 10 games left that he can afford to miss out of the remaining 50, any unforeseen injury, even a minor one, could jeopardize his MVP candidacy. A small ankle sprain or a lingering issue that sidelines him for a couple of weeks might be sufficient to disqualify him from MVP contention.

As Embiid strives to balance his extraordinary on-court performances with injury management, the unpredictable nature of the NBA season introduces an element of uncertainty. History, marred by past injury challenges, does not favor Embiid in the pursuit of individual accolades, highlighting the delicate balance athletes must strike between pushing their limits and preserving their health for sustained success.
