As the best basketball player on the planet, Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic is about as dominant as they come on the basketball court. But, unlike LeBron James and other top-tier stars, the Joker tries his hardest to avoid the public spotlight. It wasn’t until a recent interview with his teammate, Aaron Gordon, that we found out why. Apparently, the European star is just not a fan of the celebrity lifestyle.
“When I finish my career, I really wish nobody knows me,” said the Joker. “I really don’t like this life because, at the end of the day, we are just basketball players… It just feels sad, whenever you go to the bar, restaurant, some game, people are just taking their phones out and trying to record you. I think that’s really, I’m going to say, rude. It’s not that I’m out showing myself; I’m just who I am.”
Jokic has always been more on the humble side of life, but he’s the first superstar to outright detest being famous. For Jokic, basketball is really just a job and it’s just one of the many important things that he’s got going on in his life. When he eventually retires from the NBA, there’s a good chance we might never see him again.
Basketball Is Secondary For Nikola Jokic
Most NBA players live, breathe, and eat basketball. For guys at the very top, it’s even more extreme as we saw in the cases of Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and plenty of other NBA superstars. But for Jokic, basketball isn’t even number one in his life. As he explained in a past interview, this game isn’t the main concern right now and he’s only playing at this level because it happens to be something he’s good at.
This type of attitude usually doesn’t get you far in the NBA, or anywhere that involves the best of the best, but the Joker has found a way to prosper anyway and his career speaks for itself as a 2x MVP, 5x All-Star, and 2023 NBA champion. It’s been a truly unprecedented run for the Nuggets superstar and he’s made a fortune for his performance over the years. But when it’s all said and done, we all know that Jokic will disappear from the public eye almost just as quickly as he entered it.
Jokic On Track For His Third MVP
Even for a guy with such a casual relationship with the game of basketball, Jokic is setting the league on fire. After winning 2 MVPs, and capturing his first title last year, Nikola cemented himself as an all-time great and he’s on track to continue that run this season. Through 31 games, the Joker is averaging 26.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game on 54.1% shooting.
This season, with several key players in and out of the lineup, Jokic has led the Nuggets to the third-best record in the West at 22-10. The question now is, can the Nuggets repeat as champions and mark their place in history? with Nikola leading the way, anything is possible but the path ahead is more challenging than it’s ever been before.
