According to former NBA guard Lou Williams, the 2020 NBA championship would have played out differently had the players never been forced into the bubble. As Williams explained on Trae Young’s ‘FromThePoint’ podcast, the Clippers would have won it all that year if the season was never suspended.
“I think we win the championship if covid doesn’t happen… I think I was in the bubble 97 days…[by] day 67, I was like ‘let’s get the F*** out of here.’ So, I think mentally, we wasn’t in it for the long game,” Williams said. “We didn’t really see – we didn’t really see the pot of gold at the end of it. We were starting to hear the rumblings like, ‘Nobody’s going to respect this chip’ and all of that. So, I think we kind of just took our foot off the gas.”

The Clippers finished second in the West that season and looked to be on track for a Finals showdown against the Lakers before the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. That winter, all chaos broke loose as the virus claimed millions of lives and the NBA had no choice but to shut down activities and resume the season later. By the time the playoffs were finally allowed to happen, the Clippers didn’t have enough steam to keep the run going and it was the Lakers who cam out on top.
What Happened In The Bubble?
With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers were considered heavy favorites to win the West and they looked good in the first round against Dallas, when they sent the Mavericks home in six games. In the second round, the Clippers held a 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets before things took a turn for the worst.
In embarrassing fashion, the Clippers lost the series and failed to deliver the Los Angeles showdown that so many fans were hoping for. Instead, the Clippers had to watch as their biggest rivals won the championship in their place. To this day, many argue that the 2020 run was the Clippers’ best chance at a ring and it seems that we may be underestimating just how close they were to making it happen that year. Looking ahead, however, there’s a sense that the Clips still have a chance to make amends for their failures even if they can’t go back to change how it all went down.
Clippers Vs. Lakers In 2023
This season, both the Lakers and Clippers are on track to be near the top of the West. For the former, the combination of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and a deep supporting cast has looked scary at times and if they can stay healthy, this could turn out to be their best season yet.
For the Clippers, we already know what Paul George and Kawhi Leonard can do on the court. When you add in James Harden and Russell Westbrook, it’s easy to see how they could make a lot of noise in April, May, and June. The key for this squad, however, will be staying on the court. Between frequent injuries load management, it’s been notoriously hard for the Clippers to build cohesion on the roster. This year, they are hoping to change that but only time will tell if they have what it takes to take care of the Purple and Gold.
