The Atlanta Hawks are coming off an abysmal 2024-25 campaign, but they are looking to turn things around this offseason. This process of revitalizing the team has started by making some key moves, with a significant one in free agency to sign Nickeil Alexander-Walker to a four-year, $62 million deal.

Alexander-Walker was one of the most sought-after free agents heading into this offseason. Although he had an impressive season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, it was expected that he would be on his way out at the end of it.

The sharpshooting wing player garnered interest from several teams around the league, primarily appearing on the radar of teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers. Unfortunately, the Hawks appear to have spoiled the Purple and Gold’s plans by picking up a key piece to fill out their wing depth.

As per the contract report by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the 26-year-old will have a player-option and trade kicker included as part of the deal as well, an enticing contract structured to attract one of the top free agents in the market.

Last season, the guard recorded an average of 9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on shooting splits of 43.8% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc. While these numbers may not inspire much confidence, the 26-year-old’s ability to be productive when given the opportunity is worth taking note of.

As per Chris Haynes, Hawks star Trae Young played an active role in recruiting Alexander-Walker to the team. The activity shown by the Hawks this offseason certainly has instilled some hope for the team being more competitive in the East next season.

The addition of Alexander-Walker marks the second move made by Atlanta in the offseason. After trading for Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis, the Hawks have sneakily become a formidable side.

With injuries debilitating franchises in the East, Atlanta may find itself in an unlikely position to emerge as one of the top sides in the conference if it can make the most of the situation. Led by an ambitious and talented star in Trae Young, Atlanta could be on the rise again next season.

As the offseason action continues with free agency in full swing, more roster changes signify the upcoming shift in power in the league.
