Victor Wembanyama is already progressing through the social media world this summer, as the entire world is seeing arguably a top-three prospect ever enter the league. The hype has only increased with his preseason performances. Hip-hop icon and NBA superfan Drake caught on and was chilling with Wembanyama, as shared by the French center on Instagram.
Drake always supports NBA players in whatever capacity he can. He will drop their names in songs or bring them out to his concerts as special guests. The latter has been something Drake has done very often, bringing out the likes of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, LeBron James and Bronny James, and even Jayson Tatum at various shows he’s done throughout the summer.
Wembanyama is scheduled to play his first-ever NBA game in two days’ time, as the San Antonio Spurs will host the Dallas Mavericks. It’ll be a baptism by fire for Wembanyama, who will have to reckon with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in his debut game.
Victor Wembanyama Is Already Dreaming Of Winning A Title
Most young players don’t discuss championship aspirations as realistic goals in the short-term, as they either go to teams that can contend but they have a small role or they go to bad teams that need to be developed into a contender. The Spurs are in the second bucket, but Wembanyama wants the team to fight for titles already.
“Everybody wants it, for sure. But some more than others. I know the Spurs know how to do it, they’ve done it in the past multiple times, and they’re gonna do it again… Some day, it’s gonna come, I’m sure.”
Wembanyama knows he’s with an organization that knows how to win titles. Even with the last five seasons being the worst of the Gregg Popovich era, Wembanyama hopes to turn it around and win a title as soon as possible, maybe even while on his rookie contract. Very few players in NBA history can claim to have led a team to a title on a rookie contract, with Dwyane Wade in 2006 being the last example.
Victor Wembanyama Thinks He Can Play All Five Positions On The Court
It is abundantly clear through the first few games of preseason that Wembanyama can do whatever he wants on the court. Wembanyama has shown off his full skill set through the preseason games we saw him in. Despite being 7’4″, he truly believes he can play all five positions on the court.
“There really are no limitations. On a lot of set plays, on a lot of plays, it really depends on where you are. I can be the point guard just as I can be the wing. It doesn’t matter.”
In my opinion, there are only two players in the league right now that can play every position on the court and they are LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo. But Wembanyama might join them in that class soon as he further develops his game.
What we’ve seen so far does show Wemby can do it all. He was nutmegging defenders off the dribble, blocking shots, hitting stepback threes, and even going coast-to-coast for emphatic dunks. He’s also done this stuff against Hall of Fame opponents, so the hype is going to be through the roof for what Wembanyama does in his rookie season.
