Coming in at 7’4″ and roughly 209 pounds, French superstar Victor Wembanyama has all the makings of a modern NBA big man. And while the 19-year-old prospect will surely be getting some time at center this season, the Spurs will use him in all kinds of different ways. According to Victor himself, positions are meaningless to him as he can play at any spot on the court.

“There really are no limitations,” said Wemby. “On a lot of set plays, on a lot of plays, it really depends on where you are. I can be the point guard just as I can be the wing. It doesn’t matter.”

Touted as the best young prospect since LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama has caught the attention of the entire basketball world for his sheer talent, work ethic, and humble personality. As the no. pick in the 2023 Draft, expectations couldn’t be higher for the youngster coming in, but he’s embraced the journey so far and fans are eager to see what he will bring to the table at this level of competition.

Wembanyama Is A Star In The Making

To say that Wembanyama dominated France’s LNB Pro A league would be an understatement. Last season, he led his team (the Metropolitans 92) to a 23-11 record while averaging 21.6 points and 3.0 blocks per game. Wemby was able to make the Finals with his group before losing to Monaco in the Finals. Until we see Wembanyama on the NBA court, it’s tough to be sure how his game will translate to the pros — but there’s good reason to be optimistic. Besides his ridiculous height and wingspan, Victor has developed the capacity to score anywhere on the court, whether it’s in the paint or behind the arc. According to GMs across the league, Wemby’s potential puts him at the top of the list when it comes to building a team, even over guys like Giannis and Luka Doncic.

With the Spurs, Wembanyama has more than just an NBA roster spot, he’s got a place where he can focus on the game, hone his talent, and develop the skills to become the superstar everyone expects him to be. The task will be far from easy, but Wemby is set up for success with Gregg Popovich and the entire Spurs organization behind his back.

Spurs Are A Rising Threat In The West

No matter how Victor looks at the start, it could take some time for the Spurs to really get their act together. After finishing 15th in the West a season ago, they don’t yet have enough talent, depth, or experience to make a meaningful run in the West and Wemby knows that it will take his complete concentration to keep the team afloat.

“What is coming fast is all the information, the new set plays, the principles,” Wembanyama said. “It’s a lot, a lot of stuff I have never seen before and don’t know. It’s hard. You have to be focused when you are on the court because if you lose attention one second, you’re screwed for the next 15 seconds.”

While some doubts remain, the Spurs are expected to be much better than they’ve been recently, and the impact of Wembanyma alone should be enough to push them ahead in the standings. When you also consider the presence of players like Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and Keldon Johnson, it’s easy to admit that this team has a bright future — but it’s one that starts and ends with Victor Wembanyama.
