Anthony Davis is one of the best players in the NBA, but when asked what position he plays, the 30-year-old claims he doesn’t know it himself.

“S***, who knows,” Davis said. “I’m still trying to figure it out… I am a big man, there we go. I’m a big that plays basketball.”

There has always been a lot of talk about Davis’ position. Teams have had him play at center, but the man himself has made it clear he’d rather not play there. It is probably too taxing on his body to bang down low all the time, and he views himself as a power forward.

He did get to primarily play at the four at the beginning of his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, as they had Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee playing big minutes at the five in the 2019-20 season. Davis only had to slot in at center toward the end of close games, but it is not a luxury that has been afforded to him in the last couple of seasons.

Anthony Davis’ Message To The Lakers On His Position

Last year, Davis stated he wanted to play at the four and not at center for the Lakers, and as per reports, his stance hasn’t changed. Davis told the Lakers he does not want to play at center for much of the regular season this time around. He wanted more support at the position, and the Lakers have tried to give it to him.

First, they signed Jaxson Hayes early on in free agency and then last month, acquired Christian Wood. Hayes gives more of a defensive presence while Wood is an offensive-minded big, so the Lakers can slide one of them in based on the situation at hand.

On paper, this might help get things back to the way they were when Davis first arrived, but it remains to be seen just how much either of these two would play.

Anthony Davis Is Going To Be The Biggest Key To The Lakers’ Success

The Lakers enter the 2023-24 season with their eyes fixated on winning another championship. If they are to win the 18th title in franchise history, though, then Davis has to be at his dominant best.

We saw him dominate on the defensive end in the 2023 playoffs, but on offense, he was rather inconsistent. Davis averaged 22.6 points, 14.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game in the postseason, and you’d want those scoring numbers to be a bit higher.

It is certainly a lot to ask of someone to dominate on both ends, but that is what the best players are supposed to do. Davis is still in his prime at the moment, and it’s not unfair to place that kind of expectation on his shoulders.

LeBron James declared that Davis is now the face of the Lakers, and it really is time for him to take over. If he doesn’t do it this upcoming season, then you really start to wonder if he ever will.
