Dwight Howard may be very close to making his return to the NBA as a member of the Golden State Warriors. After Howard had a scheduled workout with the franchise, it was reported that he would further work out with Draymond Green and Chris Paul. Green expressed his disappointment over the news leaking.

“One day, one day, everything won’t leak. One day. Good for you btw Jason. But one day, EVERYTHING won’t leak. I have a dream.”

News leaks in the NBA all the time, but players don’t often confirm it on social media. There are so many reports that not doing anything about them may be beneficial for everyone.

With his post, Green involuntarily also confirmed that the veterans in Golden State have signed off on a Howard signing. It seems like it is a matter of time before we get the announcement that Howard has signed a deal with the franchise.

Dwight Howard Spent A Year Away From The NBA

Dwight Howard last played in the NBA with the doomed 2021-22 Los Angeles Lakers. That was a rough year for Howard, who saw himself get snubbed from the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team and have an on-court altercation with his own teammate, Anthony Davis. He averaged 6.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks that season as the Lakers missed the playoffs.

Given his average performances that season and his age, many assumed Howard would go unsigned in free agency, which is exactly what happened. He played in Taiwan last season and became quite an entertaining commentator during the Finals, sending messages to players who were struggling to come and join him in Taiwan.

That won’t be needed anymore as he could join the most successful franchise of the last decade and hope to elevate them within a limited role to compete for a championship. Howard already has a ring to his name from his stint with the 2020 Lakers and would love to add another before his NBA career comes to an end.

What Does Dwight Howard Add To The Warriors?

Golden State still hasn’t filled up the chasm at center on their roster. Kevon Looney is the definite option and they did sign Dario Saric in free agency, but you need more insurance in that role. Howard is a perfectly serviceable third-choice big and will provide an alternate play-style to what Saric does. While Saric is a sweet-shooting big man, Howard will provide rim protection and rebounding at a level Saric just cannot.

This would have been Howard’s 20th season in the NBA if he had a job last season, but it’s admirable to see Howard still have a shot at the NBA in Year 20 of his career. People thought he was done in 2018 after a series of back injuries ate away at his prime. He can still provide some rotational minutes and it will be interesting to see how he fits into the fast-paced Warriors offense.

Given the Warriors also acquired Chris Paul and Cory Joseph, there seems to be a heavy lean on adding veteran talent this summer. They also have a lot of very young players, so this mix could lead to an interesting season for the Warriors.
