- Koby Altman was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence
- Altman is facing a fine and potential prison time after refusing a breath test
- NBA fans react with outrage after video of arrest goes viral
The Cleveland Cavaliers are still actively trying to re-make their image in the aftermath of LeBron James‘ departure. For the most part, things were going well for the Cavs, who have a star-studded roster with Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, but things have taken a turn for the worst amid the recent activity from team GM Koby Altman.
Altman was recently arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence, and many have come out publicly to condemn the NBA executive. On Tuesday, however, the stakes were raised even more when the body cam footage of the incident was leaked to the public.

In the video, Altman can be seen speaking to an officer, who is doing a standard sobriety test on the Cavs GM. Altman tries to play it off at first, but it becomes clear that he’s impaired based on his responses and the constant swaying motion of his body.
At this time, it’s still unclear what the fallout will look like for Altman, but he could face up to six months in prison if he doesn’t handle this situation. Meanwhile, the fans online have been ripping Altman to shreds for risking the safety of his own life and everyone on the road.
NBA Fans Are Pissed Over New Body Cam Footage
Driving under the influence is not uncommon in the U.S. today and Altman is just the latest in a long line of professional sports figures to get caught abusing substances. With the body cam footage, though, fans got to see the situation play out for themselves and many found it hard to believe that Altman couldn’t find another alternative.

With a net worth of millions, Altman had plenty of alternative options to driving his vehicle that day, but he made a mistake that he’ll have to live with. The minimum jail time for a first offense is three days, and there is a fine of $250 that will be bumped to $350 because Altman refused to take a breath test. It’s a relatively easy punishment for the Cavs GM, but the ordeal is sure to have some lingering effects on the organization as a whole.
Cavaliers Have A Culture Problem
Since LeBron’s departure in 2018, the Cavs have struggled to find their way. With no playoff series wins under their belt, the franchise desperately needs some leadership to turn their situation around. Unfortunately, Altman’s arrest is just a bad look for the entire organization and it speaks volumes about potential culture problems from the top down.
In the 2023 playoffs, the Cavaliers completely collapsed against the Knicks, losing the series in five games despite being the favorites. Fast forward months later, and the Cavaliers have done very little to bolster their roster and it remains to be seen if they can maintain their standing as one of the East’s top risers. But until the GM can get his act together and can avoid putting himself in the news for breaking the law, the Cavs may never break ground as a serious title contender.
At the very least, the Cavs must do some serious soul-searching before Donovan Mitchell gets the chance to leave in free agency
