  • New York Knicks are quietly waiting for their next great superstar
  • Bill Simmons says Knicks will land one of three NBA elites by next year
  • Knicks are one piece away from being championship favorites in the East

The New York Knicks celebrated a successful season this past May, but it’s no secret that the organization strives for more. After making the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals last season, the Knicks are aiming to climb the ranks in 2024, and they may have some help to get them there.

According to longtime sports podcaster/writer Bill Simmons, the Knicks are sure to land one of three prime-time superstars within the next year, either Giannis Antetokounmpo, Donovan Mitchell, or Joel Embiid. “They’ll get one of those three guys, I guarantee,” said Bill. “Giannis, Embiid, or Mitchell will be on that team a year from now.”

The Knicks have been on the hunt for a superstar since the departure of Carmelo Anthony back in 2017. After cycling through a range of promising prospects (like Kristaps Porzingis), they fell short of expectations every season until the current era with Julius Randle, Jalen Brunson, and RJ Barrett. And while they had a more than respectable campaign in 2022-23, the lack of a superstar really hurt them in the playoffs and they had no response to the constant attacks from Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

Obviously, with any one of the three names stars above, the Knicks would become a completely different team in the East.

The Knicks Are Just One Star Away

After going 47-35 during the season, the Knicks showed that they were a real challenger in the Eastern Conference. And while they were unable to close the deal this past season, that could change with the arrival of a top-tier superstar.

Currently, the Knicks are positioned to create a large sum of money in 2024 free agency, and they could use it to sign any big-name player that becomes available. Alternatively, they could dip into their current asset pool to finalize a trade for a star.

Whatever the Knicks choose to do, it’s clear that they need a top-10 player on the roster if they want to compete for the championship. For now, however, it remains a mystery which star will be the next to arrive in the Big Apple.

Which Star Is Most Likely To Move To Join The Knicks?

For years, the Knicks have resisted the urge to make high-risk desperation trades. When Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were available, they were mostly quiet in trade talks and the same can be said for the ongoing sweepstakes for James Harden and Damian Lillard.

The best fit for the Knicks would be someone they could stick in the frontcourt to the playoff with Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. With that in mind, it’s hard to dismiss the fit that Embiid would provide in New York. After years of chaos in Philly, he would thrive in New York with a disciplined team full of hustlers, high-level scorers, and selfless thinkers. Like most stars, Embiid also has a house in the city so he’s already familiar with the area.

But whether it’s Embiid, Giannis, or Donovan Mitchell, there’s a reason why the Knicks are connected to every disgruntled star in the league. And it’s only a matter of time before all the talk turns into reality and they finally realize their biggest ambitions.
