- Mark Cuban is a successful businessman with a net worth of $5.1 billion
- Cuban could have invested in Uber, but his offer was too low
- Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks have won the 2011 NBA championship under his leadership
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is a wealthy man with a net worth of $5.1 billion. Still, it could be higher. Cuban had a chance to invest in Uber, but instead, he made a costly decision.
“He [Travis Kalanick, Uber co-founder] comes to me like, first off, I got this thing, it’s going to replace taxi cabs,” Cuban said. “It was called Uber Cab at the time.
“I’m like, ‘I love it, I love it, I love it,'” Cuban added. “But the valuation of like $10 million, and I said I’ll do it at $5 million valuation for Uber, and [he] never came back to me. He got somebody else.”
“Just think, had I given him $250,000 on a $5 million or $10 million valuation, it’d be [worth] billions [today].”
When Uber approached Cuban about investing in their company, it was 2009. Uber was a small company with a lot of promise, but it still wasn’t enough to get Cuban to fully commit to what Uber wanted.
Today, Uber is worth $91.36 billion, and it doesn’t look like the company will slow down anytime soon. This is especially true when you factor in their Uber Eats, as well.
For Cuban personally, if he had invested $250,000, that investment would have turned into $2.3 billion. This was a big miss for the Mavericks owner, but don’t worry, the 65-year-old is doing just fine. The only thing he truly wants now is to add a second championship trophy to his collection.
Mark Cuban Is A Successful Businessman And Owner
Mark Cuban is a successful businessman and owner in the NBA, as his Dallas Mavericks won the 2011 NBA championship. Since then, the Mavs have struggled.
This is especially true after last year’s disastrous finish to the season. The Mavs finished the season with a 38-44 record, missing the Playoffs and the Play-In Tournament.
This was completely shocking, especially after how, in the previous season, Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals, losing 4-1 to the Golden State Warriors. Dallas also acquired star Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline, and they still missed the postseason.
Many questions have arisen from the Mavericks’ terrible 2022-23 season, including the talk of maybe Dallas going after superstar LeBron James. Cuban was quick to shut that theory down, as his team already has a star in Luka Dončić.
The Mavericks have had a solid offseason so far. They re-signed Irving to a three-year, $120 million deal, and they acquired Grant Williams from the Boston Celtics on a four-year deal worth $54 million.
The biggest question remaining for the Dallas Mavericks is, can they gel as a team? They have two dominant ball handlers in Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. These are great players, but there is only one basketball.
Dallas also has a terrific coach in, former NBA Rookie of the Year winner, Jason Kidd. If there’s any coach who can handle ball-dominant players, it would be Kidd, as he was the exact same way when he played.
The Mavericks open their season on the road in San Antonio to face off against the Spurs and rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama. This is the perfect test for Mark Cuban and his team.
Hopefully, Cuban has made the right decision on signing Kyrie Irving, and it won’t come back to bite him, as his miss on Uber did. This, we’ll find out in the upcoming season.
