  • Kobe Bryant was absolutely obsessed with basketball
  • That obsession made him one of the greatest players ever
  • Kobe had a hilarious answer when asked what he liked the most about basketball

Kobe Bryant seemed to have a rather simple mantra for much of his life: eat, sleep, and breathe basketball. So much so that what the Los Angeles Lakers icon liked the most about basketball was the smell of the ball, as he used to sleep with it.

“What I like the most about basketball is gonna sound pretty weird,” Bryant said. “But I like the smell of the leather basketball. When I was a kid, my mom was getting ready to kill me because I used to sleep with the ball.”

Totally obsessed with the game right from a young age.

Kobe started playing basketball when he was just three years old and began to take it seriously when he was living in Italy. As time went by, his obsession with the game grew, and he had just one goal in mind, to be the best.

Kobe Bryant Spoke About What He Enjoyed Doing The Most On The Court

When you think of Kobe, you think of his incredible scoring prowess. For his career, he averaged 25.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. Bryant won two scoring titles along the way, and his tally of 33,643 points currently ranks fourth all-time in NBA history.

Interestingly, though, Kobe once revealed there were two things he enjoyed doing more than scoring on the court. It was getting his teammates involved and playing defense.

Passing the ball isn’t something you normally associate with Bryant, but the 2008 MVP stated that he liked to see his teammates go off for career nights.

Playing defense was certainly something that Kobe took a lot of pride in, though. He never won Defensive Player of the Year, but he made one of the All-Defensive Teams on 12 occasions in his career. That’s tied for second all-time, with only Tim Duncan (15) being ahead of him.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
