Once the 1990s began, Michael Jordan was the big dog in the Eastern Conference and the NBA. Players were challenging him, but one whose name is often forgotten was Reggie Lewis.

The Boston Celtics man had the distinction of blocking Michael Jordan’s shot four times in the same game, something no other player can claim they did.

Former Celtics legend Dee Brown spoke about Reggie Lewis, his game against Michael Jordan, and his general greatness during a podcast with Michael Cooper.

“Gone too early, gone too early,” Brown said about Reggie Lewis. “He was the one who was going to carry the torch for the Celtics. We went through a phase, we lost Len Bias before I got there and then the Big 3 retired and Reggie passed away.

“I was the only one left, and Reggie was going to be the guy who was going to be my backcourt mate for 10-15 years. I never thought it was going to ruin the Celtics when the Big 3 retired, because I knew I had Reggie.

“Reggie was that guy. He’s the only guy I’ve seen block Michael’s fadeaway like three times in one game. Four times. He would score when he wanted to. People look at Kevin Durant, that was Kevin Durant back then.”

Reggie Lewis made his first and only All-Star appearance in 1992 and averaged 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game in six seasons for the Boston Celtics.

Reggie Lewis could have been an all-time great had he lived, his trajectory was going up nearly every season he was in the league. For a man who had so much potential, it is upsetting to see how many have already forgotten about his greatness.

Reggie Lewis Died At Age 27 Because Of Cardiac Arrest

Reggie Lews is one of the great NBA ‘what ifs.’ Reggie Lewis was only 27 when he passed away due to a cardiac arrest on the basketball court. It’s one of the sadder moments in basketball history.

Reggie Lewis was diagnosed with focal cardiomyopathy, which ended his NBA career in 1993. The disease could cause irregular heartbeat and heart failure, but Lewis was released from the hospital in any case.

Another doctor then reportedly told him his condition wasn’t that severe, and he began working out in preparation for a return, before succumbing to a cardiac arrest in 1993. His passing had a profound impact on many people.

Muggsy Bogues Was Playing With Reggie Lewis On The Night Of His Passing

The NBA world was in a state of shock when they heard what happened to Reggie Lewis, but no one more so than Muggsy Bogues. He was there on the court at a Massachusetts college when Reggie Lewis collapsed and eventually passed away.

“But unfortunately, he wasn’t able to play that series because of this condition. It was a nightmare when we first saw him fall. We didn’t know what was going on. I thought he just tripped on the court but once we became aware of everything… [pause] It became devastating.”

Muggsy Bogues and Reggie Lewis sort of came up together, it must have been tough to see a friend pass away at such a young age. And it was a huge loss to the basketball world, too, Lewis looked like he was about to become a certified superstar.
