The Boston Celtics made a few key moves this summer. One of the key things the team did was retain star Jaylen Brown on a five-year, $304 million supermax deal, ensuring that he and Jayson Tatum would be paired together for the long term.

When speaking to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, Jayson Tatum shared his take on Jaylen Brown’s new extension. Tatum claimed that it was a “no-brainer”, and noted that the contract was a “life-changing” amount of money.

“Much deserved, it was a no-brainer. So I’m happy for him and his family. It’s life-changing. It’s a big deal. I’m happy we’re going to have him for however much longer we’ve got him for. I’m happy about that,”

There is no doubt that retaining Jaylen Brown this summer was the optimal move for the Boston Celtics from multiple perspectives, and Tatum is right in his opinion on the deal. Brown was on the last year of his old deal, and trading him likely wouldn’t have gotten the team good value, The other option bar a trade or a new deal was letting him go for nothing in 2024 free agency, which was obviously the worst option. Thus, keeping him was the best move.

Jaylen Brown had a fantastic 2022-23 season, averaging 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists for the Celtics. He made the All-NBA Second Team, and hopefully, he can replicate a similar level of play next season.

Others Also Believe Jaylen Brown’s Contract Is A Good Deal For The Celtics

Though there have been a lot of criticisms of Jaylen Brown’s new deal, there are definitely people who think that signing him to a supermax contract was a good move. One of those people is an NBA executive, who pointed out that this is just the going rate for a star-level player on the market.

“It is a good deal because he is a star player and that is what they had to pay him,” one Eastern Conference executive said. “I love the people who say they should not have given him that contract. Like, OK, then what should they have done? Traded him? Let him go to free agency? The same people who are beating them up for signing him would be beating them up if they did not sign him. It’s crazy.”

Hopefully, we do see Jaylen Brown show the haters that he is worthy of the deal that the Boston Celtics signed him to. At the end of the day, he is a premier No. 2 option, and that certainly merits a large contract.
