- Dennis Rodman had a rather unimpressive movie CV
- His 1997 action comedy alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme was a disaster
- Rodman has been in a few reality shows
When not playing basketball, Dennis Rodman briefly forayed into Hollywood and a string of appearances on TV and in movies — and one of them was a box office dud called Double Team.
The 1997 action-comedy film starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Rodman was a complete bust and in his review, the famous Roger Ebert had a great piece of advice for the Bulls forward.
Ebert wrote in his review:
“He looks like he’s having fun, and that’s crucial for a movie actor. His agent should have told him, though, that if you can’t be the hero, be the villain. That’s always a better role than the best friend.”
‘Double Team’ received a paltry 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes and fell below the $30 million cost when it comes to collections. It ended with just $11.4 million at the box office.
Rodman played Yaz, a weapons dealer in the film, and Ebert wrote that it wasn’t really the character that the Bulls icon could embrace fully. Instead, he felt playing a villain would suit him well.
“It will give you some notion of this movie’s strangeness if I tell you that Dennis Rodman does not play the most peculiar character.”
And surely, while Rodman didn’t lead the league in points, averaging only 7.3 points. But he did lead the NBA in rebounding seven straight years beginning in the 1991-92 season and was a massive rebounding presence crucial in the Bulls’ dual three-peats.
Dennis Rodman’s Hollywood Career Wasn’t A Successful One
While he was a tremendous success on the court, it was unfortunate that Dennis Rodman’s acting career wasn’t even closely successful.
Following the dismal movie, Rodman’s acting career winded down pretty quickly. He joined the case of Soldiers of Fortune, Inc. for what was its second and final season in 1998. He had another credit in Cutaway, starring opposite Tom Berenger and Stephen Baldwin.
Barring these three, Rodman mostly played himself in brief cameos, and that was as far as his acting career went in moves. He has had some reality TV appearances on he has remained a reality TV fixture, having appeared on the UK’s Celebrity Big Brother, Love Island, and Celebrity Mole. In 2009, he was even a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice.
Not many probably remember Rodman for his Hollywood career, but he will surely go down in history as one of the greatest defensive players in the NBA.
