- Former MVP explains the importance of work ethic for NBA athletes
- Rose says the basketball must be your girlfriend
- Rose’s work ethic extended his career after various injuries
Former MVP Derrick Rose was once on track to be the best player in basketball. After becoming the youngest MVP ever in 2011, he showed the world what he could be at his best. But after a series of brutal injuries compromised his health, Rose’s career went down a dark path.
Over the course of a few years, Rose went from an MVP to an injury-prone starter for the Bulls, but he still somehow fought through it all to keep his career alive. Where most other players would quit or stop on sheer ego alone, Rose persevered and he enjoyed success even after a ridiculous storm of injuries plagued his career.
“We have a different relationship with the ball than everybody else in the world. Everywhere you go, you taking it with you, getting praise for it… The ball has to be your first girlfriend,” said Rose speaking on his amazing work ethic. “That’s the difference between the 400 players in the league and those that aren’t in the league.”

The NBA can often be a rude awakening for those whose hearts aren’t invested. The amount of work, training, and discipline required to enjoy a lengthy NBA career isn’t easy and a lot of players don’t realize what it takes to keep up with the best of the best.
For Rose, his story of perseverance is well known, and it’s not something to be taken lightly. At 34 years old, with his history of injuries, it’s a miracle he’s still on an NBA roster.
What’s Next For D-Rose?
At this point, Derrick is past the days of being a high-level difference-maker in the NBA, but he still has a lot of value as a veteran, mentor, and backup point guard who can put the ball through the net.
After escaping the bench in New York, Rose is with the Grizzlies now, where he hopes to be a mentor to young star Ja Morant.
“Somebody who can talk to Ja from the perspective of, ‘I’ve been at the absolute pinnacle, and I’ve had difficult things on and off the court that I’ve had to go through and move forward in my career and my life,'” wrote an NBA analyst on DRose’s arrival in Memphis. “So maybe, like, there’s some synergy there.”
At the very least, Rose will bring his wisdom and experience to the Grizzlies locker room, which is probably what the team could have used more of last season. Hopefully, under his guidance, Memphis can get back on the right track and learn what it means to work for success.
