- Michael Jordan explained that every successful person is selfish in some way
- He said that being selfish is the only way to find the single-minded focus required to achieve true success
- He highlighted the importance of tunnel vision and focusing on oneself as a gateway to success
Michael Jordan might be the GOAT as far as basketball achievements go, but he has just as much of an argument to be considered the most outstanding athlete off the court too.
Michael Jordan went from making $93.7 million in NBA salary to a net worth of over $2 billion. And he did all that while winning six Finals MVPs and six championships. He once spoke about what every person needs to be massively successful.
“The world she mentioned was selfish. I think we all are selfish in some respects because to be successful, you have to have tunnel vision about how you perceive yourself,” Michael Jordan said.
“Either you gonna deal with certain things or not deal with certain things. That day when you don’t wanna hang out with other people, you gonna work out on your own, you gon’ do things, you’re selfish in your own right.
“Every successful person has to be, that’s the only way you get that tunnel vision to be successful. Now, how you channel that selfishness, in our game the team sport, you have to give up some of it.
“But we still have it because we have individual goals that we have to meet… Selfishness plays a big part in all successful athletes or businesses. Because you have to have the focus, make sure you do what you have to do, you don’t care about anybody else to that degree. So that you can be successful.”
Michael Jordan has always been focused on one thing and one thing only, winning. This has alienated some people, Jordan isn’t even liked by his greatest teammate ever, Scottie Pippen. But he sits atop the GOAT pyramid and has a fortune almost anybody else would kill for. If anyone knows what they’re talking about, it’s Michael Jordan.
Michael Jordan’s Mentality Has Always Been Oriented Toward Results
Michael Jordan didn’t just want to win, he wanted to leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that he had won. The GOAT was known to mentally attack his opponents, and in a 1989 interview, he did showed just how desperate his need to dominate everyone else was. This, combined with his single-minded determination, is what led him to all the success that he enjoyed.
Michael Jordan’s killer mentality is still lauded by people to this day, no one comes close to him in that scenario. And it all came from the fact that he cared more about winning and being successful than about being liked. Many have tried, but no one has reached Michael Jordan’s level since he retired.
