Joel Embiid Reportedly Values Having A ‘One-Team Legacy’

Joel Embiid is keen on maintaining a one-team legacy and staying with the Philadelphia 76ers, complicating his desire to win a title.

The Philadelphia 76ers underwent years of pain with their infamous ‘The Process’, which saw the team tank very hard for multiple seasons in order to create a young superteam. While they missed the mark by drafting Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, they knocked it out of the park with Joel Embiid.

The lack of success in the Embiid era has clouded his future, with recent rumors suggesting the star may eventually request a trade. Some relief for 76ers fans has come in the way of a report from The Athletic’s Sam Katz suggesting that Embiid values his legacy as a one-team player.

“Embiid has told people close to him for years that he values the idea of a one-team legacy. There is a long way to go between vague comments about the mystical land of ‘anywhere else’ and an official trade request.”

Embiid became the first 76er to win the regular season MVP in over two decades last season, succeeding Allen Iverson. He averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in the regular season but had a historic dropoff in the playoffs, averaging 23.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in the 76ers’ second-round loss to the Boston Celtics.

A Pivotal Season For The 76ers

Joel Embiid has come to define ‘The Process‘ in Philly, as all the years of tanking were made worth it when the team selected him. He is deeply attached to the city and beloved by the fanbase, one of the harshest fanbases in the NBA. It’s hard to imagine him anywhere else, but the reality of his personal championship window closing may complicate his future.

Embiid can be convinced if the 76ers have a winning project around him, making possible James Harden trade talks extremely important. If the team fails to get value for him, the future of the team may begin crumbling after years of mismanaging talent around Embiid.
