Joel Embiid averaged 33.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG, and 4.2 APG in the 2022-23 NBA season. For his efforts, Embiid was honored with the MVP award.

Embiid had a great regular season, but he once again failed to carry the Philadelphia 76ers to a deep playoff run. A huge reason behind it was a dip in his averages in the postseason. He averaged 23.7 PPG, 9.8 RPG, and 2.7 APG. According to ESPN Stats and Info, his 9.4 PPG drop is the largest by that year’s MVP in NBA history.

“Joel Embiid averaged 33.1 PPG in the regular season and 23.7 PPG in the playoffs. That drop-off (-9.4) is the largest by that year’s MVP in NBA history.”

Being the MVP of the league, fans had huge expectations from Joel Embiid. The 29-year-old was expected to take his game to the next level in the playoffs. But the opposite happened as he struggled to get going.

Sure, the knee injury played a role in limiting Embiid. But that still doesn’t change the fact that he is still the only MVP in NBA history who has never played in the Conference Finals.

Embiid is 29 years old right now and is in the prime of his career. Despite that, if he’s still unable to carry the 76ers past the second round, it may be time for the organization to move forward from him.

Joel Embiid Could Request A Trade This Summer If James Harden Leaves

The aftermath of blowing a 3-2 lead vs. the Boston Celtics is that the 76ers may blow up the roster this summer.

Doc Rivers could be fired after another underwhelming performance in the postseason. In addition, James Harden can test free agency by opting out of his player option.

According to recent rumors, if Harden decides to leave the team, it could result in Joel Embiid demanding a trade as well.

“There have been whispers that Joel Embiid could want out of Philadelphia if free-agent-to-be James Harden goes back to the Rockets as has been rumored.”

Regardless of his postseason failures, Embiid is regarded as one of the best centers in the NBA right now. Most teams in the NBA would be willing to provide the 76ers with a hefty trade package to get Embiid. It all comes down to what decision Harden makes in the coming months.
