The 2022-23 NBA season was quite a rollercoaster ride for Kevin Durant and it ended with him and the Phoenix Suns getting blown out in Game 6 by the Denver Nuggets.
That brutal loss played a part in head coach Monty Williams being fired, which means Durant will play under a fourth different head coach within a year when next season starts.
At the start of last season, Steve Nash was his head coach with the Brooklyn Nets, before he was fired due to a 2-5 start. Jacque Vaughn was then given the interim role before being announced as the new head coach on November 9th. After a few months under Vaughn, Durant requested a trade to the Suns where it remains to be seen who will be the new head coach for next season following Williams’ departure.
Despite things not turning out how he’d have liked, KD is reportedly excited about the Suns’ future and wants to build there. Durant didn’t have a great postseason by his high standards, finishing with averages of 29.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 5.5 APG, 0.8 SPG, and 1.4 BPG but he would be confident that he’d play much better with a full season under his belt with the Suns.
Who Could Be The Next Head Coach For The Suns?
As for who the new head honcho could be in Phoenix, a report indicated that they are exploring the possibility of luring Tyronn Lue from the Los Angeles Clippers. That isn’t going to be an easy task by any means, as the Clippers would have no interest in parting ways with him.
They are also formulating a list of candidates that includes the likes of Mike Budenholzer and Nick Nurse, both of whom have won a title over the last five years. Assistant coach Kevin Young is also among the candidates but giving the job to an inexperienced individual might not be the smartest idea. Their window of contention isn’t particularly a big one and the Suns need someone with a proven championship pedigree to take over.
