LeBron James has never played for Gregg Popovich in the NBA, but they have a special relationship. The two have worked together on Team USA in the Olympics and the FIBA World Cup in the past.

Gregg Popovich recently signed a new 5-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs. The legendary Head Coach has been with the team since 1996, and will now be with them well into the career of Victor Wembanyama. LeBron James took the opportunity to congratulate him publicly about it.

“POP!!!!!! Congrats on the new deal. Next wine dinner on you,” James wrote on Twitter.

POP!!!!!! Congrats on the new deal. Next wine dinner on you 🍷🍷😁😉

It seems that the two have a relationship where they often meet one another over dinner, based on what LeBron James is saying in this tweet. The fact that he has reached out to congratulate Pop is a classy move from the King.

The San Antonio Spurs now have another generational talent to build around, so it makes sense for Popovich to stay. At 74, he is the oldest coach in the NBA but considering how ingrained he is in basketball, it’s not surprising that he wants to work till he’s nearly 80 years old. If anyone can do it, it’s Gregg Popovich.

The San Antonio Spurs Could Be A Team That Lands Bronny James

Although LeBron James has never played for the San Antonio Spurs, there is a chance it might happen. Despite drafting Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are expected to be poor next year while he develops his game in the league. If his Summer League debut was anything to go by, the adjustment will not be as easy as some people thought it might be.

If they end up back in the draft lottery, then the Spurs could be candidates to draft Bronny James. The youngster is doing a year of college at USC and is widely expected to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft. With the idea that LeBron James wants to play with his son and Bronny’s talent, some think that he might end up becoming a lottery pick.

Admittedly, this is a far-fetched scenario, but wilder things have happened in the NBA. If Wembanyama is an All-Star in his second season like Luka Doncic was, then LeBron James might just become interested in the idea of potentially playing for Popovich and adding another ring to his tally.
