Gilbert Arenas was one of the best guards in the NBA in the 2000s. The former Washington Wizards star was a menace for rivals during his best days, and even though he’s not compared to the best of the best, he knows he could hold his own against anybody.
For instance, the former player recently explained why he was better than Stephen Curry, one of the best players in NBA history, at age 25.
“With me, you have to understand what I’m actually saying, and I don’t think people actually listen to– they’re like, ‘oh, that was a bad team.’ Did you listen to the actual take? I’m using everything, I’m researching it to make it a certain way and then you understand it, so I got hurt at 25. I don’t have really a resume after that, so my resume is by 25, these players couldn’t f*ck with me. As a career, I’m not in these f***ing categories, right? I can’t compete with the God, you know. But before the God became a God…”
This comes after he claimed in April that until age 25, he was better than Stephen Curry. The backlash to those comments was huge, and Arenas defended himself on VladTV.
He was on one during those years, and even was inspired by LeBron James to train with the black ops. Arenas wanted to reach new heights and really compete at the highest level.
During the 2006-07 season, Gil was on a big level, posting 28.4 points, 6.0 assists and 4.6 rebounds in 74 games played with the Wizards. He was selected to his third All-Star Game that year, ranked third in points per game and 16th in assists per game.
Arenas admits that his stats after 25 can’t be compared to anybody since his career suffered a major change. At 25, Stephen Curry was trying to become the player he ended up becoming with the Golden State Warriors. In the 2013-14 NBA season, he posted 24.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 78 games, getting selected to his first All-Star Game.
The next year, he got better, posted 23.8 points, 7.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds, was selected to his second All-Star Game, and won his first of two MVP awards. He ended that season by winning the first of four championships during his honored NBA career.
So yes, before he turned 25, Arenas had a big case against Curry, but following the 2013-14 NBA season, there was no stopping or comparison for the Chef.
Gilbert Arenas Still Claims Stephen Curry Is The GOAT Of NBA Players 6’3″ And Under
Arenas knows that Curry is a total legend, and even called him the greatest player 6’3″ or under in NBA history. Steph is now a four-time NBA champion, a Finals MVP, and more, becoming one of the best players of this generation and one of the 10 greatest players of all time in the eyes of many.
It’s unclear how great Arenas would have been if he had stayed healthy, but he knows that until that bad injury, he was on track to become an elite player in the association.
