The Golden State Warriors lost in the 2016 NBA Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers, blowing a 3-1 lead. Despite that, it is fair to say that Draymond Green had a great individual series.

Recently, Draymond Green claimed that he would have been the 2016 Finals MVP had the Warriors won Game 7. In fact, Green called it the greatest “teaser” of his entire career.

“It’s like the greatest teaser of my life. I had 32 points, 15 boards, and 9 assists. If we win Game 7, I’m the Finals MVP.”

There is no question that Draymond Green had an insane overall series in the 2016 Finals. He averaged 16.5 PPG, 10.3 RPG, and 6.3 APG overall in that series, while also providing DPOY-caliber defense. He also shot 40.6% from the 3PT range, and his individual performance would have merited the Finals MVP award. However, ultimately, that performance was not enough for the Warriors to win the series, and 2016 remains a what-if not only for Green but for everyone else on that Warriors team.

Draymond Green Also Knows He Cost The Warriors The 2016 NBA Finals With His Suspension

Part of the reason that the Golden State Warriors lost the 2016 Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers was the fact that Draymond Green got suspended for Game 5 after kicking LeBron James in the groin. In fact, he previously admitted that he was the reason the team lost.

“I cost us a championship. I’m fine with that. I can take that on the chin, no problem. I own up to my mistakes. ‘Would I do it again? One thousand percent’.”

Even though the 2016 NBA Finals was a heartbreaking loss for the Golden State Warriors, it is clear that the team ultimately managed to get revenge on the Cleveland Cavaliers. They won the 2017 and 2018 NBA championships against the Cavaliers and showed that they are a dynasty.

It remains to be seen if the Warriors will end up winning more championships in the future. They most recently won in 2022, and the talent on the team suggests that they can win once again despite losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2023 playoffs.
