Charles Barkley has always had a lot of love for his alma mater, Auburn University. It was where he really made a name for himself and he is now taking measures to ensure that the university remains diverse.
Following the affirmative action ruling by the Supreme Court, which declared race can no longer be used as a criterion for college admissions, Barkley has decided to change his will, as per AL.com.
“In my will, I am leaving Auburn $5 million,” he said Friday. “I’m going to change it to be just for scholarships for Black students. That’s just my way of trying to make sure Auburn stays diverse.
“I love Auburn,” he added. “I’ve actually changed it to be used for kids from poor homes. But after that ruling yesterday, my phone was blowing up. I was talking to my friends and said, ‘I need to make sure Black folks always have a place at Auburn. So, I’m gonna change my will and make it exclusive for Black students—all $5 million.’ It’s just for me the right thing to do. I always want to make sure that Auburn’s diverse.”
Barkley also revealed that when he originally made his will, it was supposed to be just for Black students, but he chose not to go that route. With this ruling, however, he felt the need to do it. The ruling stated that colleges can no longer give any kind of preference to applicants just because they are from a particular race.

Barkley played college basketball at Auburn for three seasons, during which he averaged 14.1 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.6 APG, 0.9 SPG, and 1.7 BPG. He led the SEC in rebounding all three seasons and was named Player of the Year in 1984.
Also that year, he led the college to the NCAA tournament for the first time in their history, although they would lose 72-71 to Richmond in their first game. Still, Barkley has gone down as arguably the greatest player in the program’s history, and they retired his No. 34 jersey in 2001.
