The Lakers elected to use their 17th pick in the 2023 Draft in drafting Jalen Hood-Schifino to add to their guard rotation instead of trading the pick away for a win-now prospect.
Schifino gets a chance to play alongside LeBron James and spoke about being seven days old when James was drafted by the Cavaliers. He called LeBron ‘old’ while making this statement, something that has upset fans and caused JHS to issue a clarification on Instagram.
“I would never disrespect LeBron. He’s one of the best players to ever play this game and I’m blessed to be able to play alongside him! If anything, I’m giving him praise for what he’s doing at his age.”

Everyone with good sense would understand that Schifino was not taking a shot at his team’s superstar before training camp has even started. LeBron being old is a hard fact, not an opinion. His proficiency after 20 seasons in the league is unheard of, so James being old is a compliment as he’s still dominating the NBA and making history.
Will Age Impact LeBron James In Year 21?
Yes, it will. We can say that almost with certainty given how he ended last season. It’s become a yearly pattern for James to be injured by February and play the end of the season on one leg, with 2022-23 being the third season in a row where that has happened. Age is already impacting James heavily, but he’ll hope to make everyone forget that when the season starts.
LBJ averaged 24.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists in the playoffs, which are great numbers for most NBA players. With James, we expect a different standard, especially in the postseason. His average was 28.9 points per game in the regular season, so there was a clear drop-off. With the Lakers having more options around him, it’s likely we won’t see LeBron putting up big numbers every night and harming his body throughout the season. They’ve already made moves to retain positive playoff performers Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.
Calling him old is not offensive. Counting him out because he’s old, well, that isn’t just offensive but also silly.
