The Golden State Warriors will be heading into the 2023-24 season optimistic about returning to championship form after making a big trade to acquire Chris Paul for Jordan Poole and picks.

Paul is the definition of a veteran point guard in the NBA and could work wonders in a Warriors locker room coming off a turbulent season. Klay Thompson in particular seems very excited to play alongside Paul, as he told The Athletic.

“Any time you get to play with a player who is one of the best of your generation it’s an honor. It’s a little weird because we’ve had so many battles in the past with Chris, and he’s led so many teams that nearly knocked us off or did knock us off all the way back in 2014. I think he’s just going to add such a calming presence and leadership component that we need. I know Steph and him have a long history together being both from North Carolina. For me, it’s going to be a smooth transition playing with such a passer and playmaker, I’m just excited.”

The Warriors didn’t have an inherent need for another point guard and could’ve found better-fitting options that would have been cheaper. But adding CP3 reflects the team’s desire to double down on their competitive window and take a chance on a proven culture-changer.

What Does CP3 Bring To The Table?

Paul averaged just 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists last season, showing that the older he gets, the worse his scoring becomes. His assists total reflects he can still dime with the best of them.

That could be crucial in stabilizing the Warriors’ bench and involving players like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody more often. Draymond Green willingly started coming off the bench at times to help bring structure to the unit which wasn’t managed well by Jordan Poole on the court, who was a scorer before being a facilitator.

Even though CP3 isn’t the All-Defensive selection he used to be, he is still a tough defender that doesn’t back down from matchups. While his ability to stay in front of opposing guards has dissipated, Paul is still an expert at forcing turnovers and steals. His energy would transform the Warriors, as long as he is playing most of his minutes with the bench unit that needs him.
