While Victor Wembanyama may have been the biggest story of the 2023 NBA Draft, Scoot Henderson wasn’t too far behind as the highest-rated guard in this Draft class. Any other year, Scoot likely would have been the top pick in the draft, but he fell to three this year, behind Wemby and Brandon Miller.

Now, as a Trail Blazer, Henderson can focus on developing his game and prepare for the grind ahead. In a recent chat with the media, Scoot spoke on his future and why he believes Portland is ultimately the best place he could have landed.

“I feel like Portland was the best situation for me,” Henderson said. “[Former Ignite teammate] Pooh Jeter is there right now with the G League and stuff like that, and then me texting Dame two years ago. It all came full circle.”

Of course, Scoot’s arrival in Portland has called Damian Lillard’s future into question and there are reports that he could be on a different team before October. But instead of campaigning for Dame to leave, Henderson expressed a desire to stay with Lillard and learn from his game.

“I think it would be great just to learn from him, just to sit back and really observe a great player,” Henderson said. “Especially just being that close to him and going there. Especially just the guard he was coming into the league and how he was fearless. Fearless of anybody. And how he kind of came in and impacted the game at a high level. Yeah, just to learn from that, it would be great.”

Will Scoot Replace Damian Lillard?

By all accounts, Damian Lillard is loyal to the city of Portland and he has no intention of leaving. But Dame has also been clear about wanting to compete and the Blazers are in no position to do that right now.

“Dame and his people were not thrilled that [Portland] used the pick,” wrote Blazers reporter Sean Highkin.

It remains to be seen how this ends for the Trail Blazers, but it’s unwise for them to try and play on both timelines. If they want to do what’s best for their team, they need to choose a direction and go all in one way or the other.
