The Miami Heat have had one of the most incredible runs through the playoffs for a team in the last 20 years, as they are playing in the NBA Finals dispute and entering the playoffs as an eighth seed.

Given the giants that Miami has had to slay on their way to the Finals, Charles Barkley thinks if they can also beat the Nuggets, this will be the greatest underdog championship run in the history of the NBA.

“If the Miami Heat are able to win this championship, it will be, in my opinion, the greatest run ever for an underdog.”

There is really no disputing what Barkley said. If an eighth seed wins a title, it definitely takes the cake as the greatest underdog run in league history. The best comparison right now would be the 2011 Dallas Mavericks, who were favored to lose three out of their four series on the way to the championship.

Can Miami Actually Win The Finals?

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is currently underway and sees the Nuggets enjoy a healthy 16-point lead with 7:45 minutes left in the third quarter. The Nuggets have been in control of this game from the start, with Jimmy Butler struggling to make an offensive impact. He has just 9 points on the night, but Bam Adebayo is playing really well. Adebayo leads all Miami scorers with 22 points in the game at this point.

Denver has too many weapons for the Heat, as evidenced by Nikola Jokic not even trying to make an impact through scoring. He has taken just four shots all game but has dished out 11 assists up until now, a total that will likely increase even more. Jamal Murray is leading Denver with 24 points.

The challenge for Miami is much taller than what they faced with Milwaukee or Boston. If they can pull this series win off after likely losing tonight’s Game 1, it’ll be an incredible feat.
