Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have gotten deep into the playoffs several times already, but they have yet to close the deal and bring home an NBA championship. Unlike the other teams who failed to get it done, it wasn’t a lack of talent that kept the Cs from success. Rather, it was a lack of focus that led to led to wildly inconsistent play.

At their best, the Celtics are nearly unbeatable, but they struggle to stay at that level consistently, and there’s nowhere else for the fans to look but the two stars. For Jaylen Brown in particular, his flaws were exposed to a heightened degree in this series and in Game 7, where he dropped 19 points on 34% shooting.

“Jaylen Brown has turned into a turnover machine. I found someone who has a worse handle than Russell Westbrook. I don’t think you can debate that anymore. It’s routine, he’s trying to go through his legs like a high schooler, middle schooler, and the ball kicks off his foot and it’s going the other way. You are a second-team All-NBA player and you have middle school handles!”

After Jayson Tatum tweaked his ankle in the first play of the game, it was an opportunity for Jaylen to step up and assert himself as a star capable of rising to the occasion. And while comparing Jaylen Brown to Westbrook might be a bit extreme, he certainly was as harmful to the Celtics on Monday as Russ was to the Lakers all season long.

Interestingly, Brown is up for a contract extension this offseason, and the word on the street is that he’ll be seeking the maximum possible salary.

Should Celtics Extend Jaylen Brown?

Brown will join Tatum as a supermax candidate this summer, but it remains to be seen if the team is willing to pay such a high price for two guys who can be unpredictable in high-pressure situations.

For now, we have to assume that the Celtics are going to keep Brown for as long as they can but look for the front office to consider all options ahead of a crucial NBA offseason.

Because if the Celtics decide that Jaylen isn’t a good fit in Boston, his services will be a coveted prize across the association.
