Michael Jordan is regarded as the greatest player of all time by most basketball fans around the world. But MJ didn’t reach that status overnight.

Most see Jordan’s success from afar and think he reached there easily. That’s far from the case. Mike had plenty of failures in his life. But instead of letting those failures hold him back, he made sure to learn from them. Steve Harvey gave a motivational speech about failure, using the example of Michael Jordan.

“Michael Jordan took over 900 game-winning shots,” Harvey said. “Michael Jordan ain’t made but 147 of them shots. You ain’t hear nothing about the misses. They only write about the wins, man. But he learned how to get them 146 by missing 750 times. You don’t have dreams without test, and everything you’re going through is god preparing you for what you ask for. So when you get tested, it’s actually god preparing you for what you ask for. You got to have hardships, setbacks.

“The only way to learn how to get up, you got to fall. Only way to learn how to get over, you got to be under. The only way to learn how to win, you got to lose. Only way to appreciate the laughter, you got to be crying. You would not appreciate the sunshine if it didn’t rain. You would not love the morning sunlight if it never got dark. It is designed that way in life, man. You don’t like it. I didn’t like being homeless. I didn’t like living in a car. I didn’t like getting divorced. I didn’t like losing everything twice. I didn’t like none of that. But it was preparing me for life he had for me.”

Michael Jordan is one of the winningest players to ever play in the NBA, and he has attempted over 900 game-winning shots in his career, per Steve Harvey. But that doesn’t mean that he nailed all of them.

As apparent from the video, Jordan has made several game-winning shots over the course of his career. He gained the confidence and skills to knock them down by missing many more than he made.

Michael Jordan Once Revealed What Made Him Successful

Hearing the recipe for the success of Michael Jordan from someone else is motivating. But what’s better than that?

Well, how about ‘His Airness’ revealing the secret to his success himself? Yes, MJ did that in a 1997 commercial for Nike.

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

It’s a great lesson for anyone who wants to succeed not only on the basketball court but also in life. After all, learning the secret to the success of the greatest basketball player of all time isn’t something that fans get to witness every day.
