Kyrie Irving Will Stay With Dallas Mavericks, Say NBA Agents

Point guard Kyrie Irving is one of the best players in the league when he is on the court. He is well-known for his scoring and ballhandling ability, and there’s no doubt that he’s one of the best shot-creators in the league.

The Dallas Mavericks notably traded for Kyrie Irving ahead of this year’s trade deadline, despite him being on an expiring contract. There is a chance that he will leave in free agency, and he has already been linked with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, there are some who believe that he will stay with the Dallas Mavericks.

“I hear they had a handshake deal before the trade [with the Brooklyn Nets],” one source said, per Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. “And Kyrie wouldn’t have said yes to anything less than the max.”

“I hear he’s going back to Dallas on a 3+1 [a player option on the fourth year]. His contract will line up [identically] with Luka’s.” one player agent said—which would total $210.1 million.

There’s no doubt that keeping Kyrie Irving will be in the Dallas Mavericks’ best interest. He is an All-NBA level player when healthy, and he will be Luka Doncic’s best co-star thus far.

This season, Kyrie Irving averaged 27.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 5.5 APG for the Dallas Mavericks. It will be interesting to see how he and Luka Doncic look together next season if he stays, and they definitely have a high ceiling as a duo.

The Dallas Mavericks Reportedly Feel Good About Their Chances Of Keeping Kyrie Irving

It seems as though the Dallas Mavericks are supremely confident about their chances of keeping Kyrie Irving, according to Ramona Shelburne. However, she did note that Irving has “quite a bit of leverage” in contract negotiations.

“They feel really good about their chances of keeping Kyrie Irving,” Shelburne said. “When they traded for him, they had an option, obviously, to sign him for a two-year extension. He wants more than two years. … Kyrie wants four. So, it may come down to whether or not they’re willing to go to that fourth year, but if he has leverage outside the Mavericks, they may have to go further than they initially want to go. He has quite a bit of leverage because, quite frankly, they cannot lose him. They already lost Jalen Brunson for nothing. They cannot lose Kyrie Irving for nothing.”

Even though Kyrie Irving can be a risk based on his availability in recent years, it is a risk that the Mavericks should take. They have few ways to replace his impact, and keeping him is clearly the best choice.
