Guard Austin Reaves has had a breakout for the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs this season, showing ballhandling ability, 3PT shooting, and playmaking. In the playoffs, Reaves has averaged 16.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 4.6 APG going into Game 3 against the Denver Nuggets.

It is clear that Reaves is a quality role player, and he will notably be a free agent at the end of the season. A recent report from NBA insider Marc Stein revealed that there will be at least one team that will offer him “more than the Lakers want to spend”.

“Austin Reaves market… not clear yet. But there will definitely be a team or two that offers more than the Lakers want to spend. There will be at least one.”

There’s no doubt that Austin Reaves deserves a big-time new contract for his play this season. Though it is unclear how good he can be without the presence of Anthony Davis and LeBron James, his skill set suggests that he can find a degree of success anywhere in the league.

The Lakers Are Worried That A Team Will Offer Austin Reaves More Than $50 Million

With the recent report from Marc Stein in mind, it is clear that teams will be interested in Austin Reaves. In fact, there is some worry from the Lakers that Reaves will get a deal that is bigger than $50 million this offseason.

“The most this postseason goes on, the most Austin Reaves gets on the court and plays and enjoys himself being a top-3, top-4 option on this team. And so, the most the Lakers can offer outright is 4-years, a bit over $50 million, I think it’s $52, $54 million. At this point, that’s gotta be a lot. If you’re Austin Reaves, what can you get out in the marketplace?” Shams Charania reported.

“More, more teams around the league with cap space, teams like Houston, San Antonio, you have to look at a guy like that, because he’s not old, he’s not super young, either. He’s kind of that middle-of-the-pack age range guy that’s still enough career-wise that can come in, fit in with your group, be a better leader to some extent, but still grow and develop with your group.”

“There’s a concern for sure, if you’re the Lakers, that he’s gonna get potentially an offer way higher than $50 million.”

Even though there may be some financial constraints for the Lakers when it comes to keeping Austin Reaves, they must figure out a way to do so. Giving up a young talent like him would be foolish, especially since he has a lot of room to grow as a player.
