It isn’t often that the first pick of an NBA Draft goes into a good situation but that is exactly what will happen with Victor Wembanyama.
He will end up with the San Antonio Spurs, where he’ll play under the great Gregg Popovich, but a source told NBA insider Landon Buford that they don’t believe Pop will coach the Frenchman for too long, with Steve Kerr taking over.
“With the Spurs getting the number one pick, I don’t see Gregg Popovich coaching this kid [Victor Wembanyama] long,” An NBA Source Tells me.
“This is another opportunity for Steve Kerr to walk into and win championships. Like Phil Jackson won championships with the Bulls and then took a year off and started winning with the Lakers.”
The source added, “Kerr is a Popovich disciple and I can see the Spurs winning a championship in the next five years under the next Phil Jackson [Steve Kerr].

It certainly isn’t an outlandish claim by means. Kerr’s contract with the Golden State Warriors expires after next season and should Popovich decide to finally retire then, he could ask Kerr to take over. Kerr is a Popovich disciple and while he turned down Phil Jackson, one of his mentors, in 2014 to take the Golden Tate job, you’d think he won’t turn down Pop in this instance.
The allure of getting to coach one of the greatest prospects ever might well tempt Kerr to head to San Antonio and potentially establish a new dynasty there. It would be a bit like Jackson’s move to the Los Angeles Lakers, as the source pointed out and who knows, Kerr might get close to his mentor’s 11 championships if he goes through with it.
Steve Kerr Says He Hasn’t Discussed An Extension With The Warriors
With all the talk surrounding the end of the dynasty, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Kerr walk away if the 2023-24 campaign ends in disappointment. During his exit interview, he stated he has not discussed his extension, as that isn’t the priority at the moment.
“Our organization has a lot to sort through this summer,” Kerr said. “My contract situation is not – nor should it be at the top of the list. Right now Bob’s (Myers) contract situation is number one because that influences a lot of the player decisions that have to be made, contracts, draft, free agency. So we will get to my stuff whenever that happens, and I’m in no rush for that. I love coaching, I love coaching these players, I love coaching the Warriors, I love living in the Bay. But I’m also in the NBA. All you have to do is look at your phone every day and see the next Hall-of-Fame coach that’s fired. It’s insane. I’ve never seen the league like this. So I’m under no illusions that I have a lifetime job here or something like that. But I love what I do, and I hope to be coaching here for a long time but you never know how things work out, so we’ll see.”

He does express a desire to stay but did leave it at the end there that you never know what can happen in the future. If Kerr doesn’t sign an extension as next season goes on, the possibility of him leaving, potentially to the Spurs, only gets bigger.
