The Dallas Mavericks are sitting at home watching the 2023 NBA Playoffs and counting the days to the Draft Lottery to see if they’re going to be losing their draft pick to the Knicks this season.

They lost another thing to the Knicks this season and that was Jalen Brunson, who left the Mavs and signed with New York in the summer. Mavs’ head coach Jason Kidd has no hard feelings towards Brunson and is happy he could empower him to get paid.

“You bring up losing Brunson, the biggest thing is that I am happy he got paid. He helped us. I know Cuban doesn’t like this but I love helping a player get paid. I’ll tell the player on the first day of camp, ‘Tell me what you want?’ Everybody wants shots, everybody wants minutes. But that’s not all true. They wanna get paid and they wanna play. I can help you do that. The other part is that I am going to ask for a couple of things. Trust, communicate, and play hard. If you ask Brunson, he’ll tell you. He listened and good things happened. I only want to put people in a position to be successful, that’s it. There are 30 companies in the NBA, we can’t all stay in the same company. For him top go to New York to get paid and have the opportunity to run his own team, I’m happy for him.”

Kidd may be at peace with Brunson’s decision but Mark Cuban hasn’t been. He criticized Jalen and his father, Rick Brunson for orchestrating his move to New York. The fact that New York ponied up the money and the opportunity proved that they wanted Brunson more than the Mavs and it showed.

After all, Dallas rejected multiple extension offers throughout last season that could have kept JB on a cheap contract. Alas, they now move on with Kyrie Irving as Luka’s co-star.

Who’s To Blame In Dallas?

Jason Kidd has been criticized heavily almost all season for his weak coaching this season. Whatever Kidd’s shortcomings may be, he was also hamstrung by a weak roster. The front office has been failing at building the roster for years and Brunson was one of their few successful discoveries. They’ve lost him and don’t have room to improve much more from here on out.

Kidd literally said that Mark Cuban doesn’t like the fact that he likes to get players paid, which is a worrying notion to have when you’re an ambitious billionaire owner. But there are so many flaws up and down the organization that there is no one person that can be blamed. Even Luka Doncic isn’t immune to blame for his worsening defense every season.

A big offseason awaits Dallas, as they’ll hope to not lose Kyrie Irving just like they lost Brunson last season.
