Draymond Green’s future with the Golden State Warriors has been a topic of discussion several times since this past summer.
Many believe that Green may opt out of his player option and join another franchise after giving 11 years to the Warriors. However, Zach Buckley of ‘Bleacher Report’ believes Green would be foolish to leave the Warriors in the offseason.
“Back in January, Draymond Green told Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks that ‘the writing is on the wall’ regarding his future with the Golden State Warriors. … In October, the Dubs gave nine-figure extensions to both Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins,” Buckley wrote. “Green, who was also extension-eligible, didn’t get a new deal. While Golden State seemingly prints money, its payroll is going places even this organization may not be able to stomach.”
He added: “But if the Dubs can make the money work—either by Green picking up his $27.6 million player option or declining it to sign a longer deal (almost assuredly with a lower salary)—there is no reason to break up what has been a preposterously productive partnership.”
Buckley then concluded by weighing in on both options and believes Green has an easy decision to make.
“You’re telling me he can remain in this perfect ecosystem and either pocket $27.6 million or collect an eight-figure salary over multiple seasons? That’s a no-brainer.”
Green is no longer the player he once was, so getting a hefty contract is a pipedream for him. Keeping that in mind, it would indeed be foolish for the 33-year-old to let go of $27.6 million and join a new team.
Draymond averaged 8.5 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 6.8 APG, 1.0 SPG, and 0.8 BPG while shooting 52.7% from the field and 30.5% from the three-point line in the 2022-23 NBA season.
Draymond Green Addressed His Future With The Warriors
Draymond Green is not someone who is living a fantasy that he will miraculously land a max contract with the Warriors this summer.
If anything, in an interview with Taylor Rooks in January, Green opened up about his future with the Dubs. Green revealed he knows ‘the writing on the wall’ regarding his time with the organization.
“Quite frankly, the writing’s on the wall. I understand the business. We tend to get into this mindset of someone owes us something because of what we’ve accomplished. You’d be an idiot to walk around feeling that way. I feel like you’re just setting yourself up for failure. You’re setting yourself up for heartbreak, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.
“As opposed to saying no, ‘let me learn this business.’ If you don’t get to know this business, then you can be blind-sighted and be like,’ Oh man, well, everything I done there, I thought I’d be there forever.’ I would love to be. But I understand the luxury tax, I understand you got these young guys and contracts up, and they have to get paid. Like, I understand all of those things.”
It’s really mature of Green to understand the business side of things in the NBA. While he is aware of the fact that he may not end his career with the Warriors, there is still a ray of hope that Green stays with the organization.
That ray of hope is none other than the words of Stephen Curry. Curry is undoubtedly the best thing that has ever happened to the Warriors. The two-time NBA MVP is on great terms with Draymond and will most likely want him to stay with the team.
