Victor Wembanyama is touted as the consensus number-one overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The towering 19-year-old French superstar is already expected to be the next big thing in the NBA.
Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson of Bally Sports recently spoke with Nicolas Batum about Wembanyama. Batum revealed he sees shades of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Davis, Rudy Gobert, and Kristaps Porzingis in his French teammate.
“When I first saw him, I thought he’s going to be a better version of Porzingis,” Robinson wrote. “Rudy is great on defense, but I think that he is more versatile on defense than Rudy. … So I really can’t choose one player, but we can see some AD. We can see some Porzingis and can see a little bit of Giannis. So sometimes we can see a little bit of a couple of players.
“I watch his games every weekend, and, I mean, obviously he has a long road. And I know people are waiting for him for sure. And, I mean, he has all the potential to be great to what he wants to be. But, at the end, he’s going to be his own version of himself. And that’s special.”
Victor Wembanyama’s biggest trait is his 7’2″ height combined with guard-like ball-handling skills. Although Wembanyama still has a thin body frame, he is expected to dominate the league from all parts of the court.
Wembanyama has already proven himself on the international scale, but playing in the NBA is a different challenge. Keeping that in mind, there are a few analysts who doubt his true potential when he gets drafted into the league.
Victor Wembanyama Opened Up On His NBA Comparisons
Getting compared to well-established superstars in the NBA has obviously sky-rocketed the expectations from Victor Wembanyama.
Instead of taking the pressure of those comparisons, Wemby has embraced them. So much so that he wants to be like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo when he gets drafted into the NBA.
“I would hate that my game resembles only one player. I think that wouldn’t be ambitious enough. But the closest, if I got to pick two, I’d say Giannis and KD. Those are my two favorite players.”
Wembanyama is still just 19 years old and is already being touted as the biggest prospect in the NBA since none other than LeBron James.
It will be exciting to see if he can reach anywhere close to the level of his comparisons. The 2023 NBA Draft is all set to take place on June 22, 2023, that’s when fans will find out which team will draft the French phenom.
