Basketball is a sport that is about skill, but it’s also about stature. For example, the NBA has steadily, over the years, seen a decline in the number of players that are under 6 feet. Height isn’t a requirement to be good at basketball, but it’s a massive advantage.
And while there are a few 7-footers in the NBA, there is only one in the WNBA. That’s why it wasn’t a surprise that a video of a 7 feet tall girl recently went viral. To give an approximation of height, she is as tall as Joel Embiid.
There were quite a few reactions from fans on the YouTube video, with one bringing up Victor Wembanyama, “What in the Victor Webanyama! Unfortunately, she probably doesn’t have 1/1000 of the care and training he has. I wish her good general health outside of sports.”
And while there was general amazement about her height, one fan was disappointed that she went for a layup instead of a dunk: “I clicked because I was impressed by her ability to grow that tall, but then she layed up her dunk opportunity and I realized.”
The issue with being tall is that it often comes with a lot of health complications. One fan addressed that, writing, “Unfortunately she’s barely mobile at this age and that body isn’t going to hold up long.”
And while there were a few unkind comments, one noticed a lovely moment from the video: “She just slapped the ball away instead of taking the ball and possessing it when she could easily do it. What a sweetheart.”
Who Is The 7 Feet Tall Woman In The Video?
The girl in the video is 26-year-old Poonam Chaturvedi from India. She represented India at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in 2017 but didn’t make the team for the latest iteration of the tournament (via Sportstar). While her height is quite rare among women, her build has not allowed her to play at too high a level.
The international game has not worked out for Chaturvedi, but she played for the Indian Railways, who employed her, as recently as in 2022. These kinds of videos are always surprising when they take the internet by storm, but she is unlikely to make it overseas to the WNBA or anything of that sort.
