Dominique Wilkins is one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. In his prime, he was competing with his Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference, and even though he never won a championship, he is remembered as among the greatest to do it. Wilkins had some good Atlanta Hawks teams, but he also spend a year with the Clippers. And one story he told about a former teammate of his was quite wild.

“You know how I knew I was in trouble?” Wilkins asked on the Knuckleheads podcast. “One of my teammates, Elmore Spencer. Do you remember Elmore Spencer? He had a van. And he drove to practice one day in reverse because his transmission was reversed.”

This story is almost hard to believe because of how ridiculous it sounds. But that seems like something that an NBA player might think of doing. Spencer likely never lived that down considering that Wilkins hasn’t forgotten about it almost 30 years after it happened. And these stories are quite funny, although Wilkins once shared a more serious one about something Michael Jordan did.

Dominique Wilkins Told The Story Of What Michael Jordan Said In The Atlanta Hawks’ Locker Room

Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan had some serious battles with one another. Both in the Slam Dunk Contest and when their teams clashed in the NBA. While Jordan won more than Wilkins did, it’s a story that Wilkins told about something he said that truly stands out

“We’re in a suit & tie, just walked into the locker room. MJ walks into our locker room. He walks by me, he walks by Kevin. When he gets to Randy Wittman he said ‘Lace ’em up – it’s gonna be a long f*****g night.’ I didn’t know what to say, I was shocked. He had 60 that night.”

It wouldn’t be surprising if people wonder what Dominique Wilkins could have been if he played in a different era. He was among the greatest of the time, but he never quite won the championships that would earn him a spot alongside the biggest legends of the era. At least his Slam Dunk exploits and some of these stories will never be forgotten.
