NBA players today, just like most of the world, are hooked to social media. A lot of them read their mentions after the game, and there are usually some negative comments from fans.

Defending yourself from your main account isn’t ideal, which is why they resort to burners, and R.J. Hampton admitted he has them on three separate platforms.

“Mine’s still active too and I be active on my page too,” Hampton said on his Young Person Basketball Podcast. “If you really paid attention, you might be able to find it but it’s definitely there. I have a burner on Instagram, TikTok, not Snapchat, and Twitter.”

“Honestly it’s probably like once a month I was going to defend myself. I think that’s it. I don’t care, who else gonna defend me if I don’t defend myself.”

Some fans are certainly going to try and find his burner accounts now! When you’re a lesser-known player like Hampton, there is really no one else who is going to defend you, so it isn’t a surprise that he feels the need to do it.

Hampton was ranked among the top six players of the 2019 recruiting class, but it’s safe to say his NBA career hasn’t gone according to plan. He was waived by the Orlando Magic earlier this year and then signed by the Detroit Pistons, for whom he is averaging 7.0 PPG, 2.0 RPG, and 0.9 APG in 17 games while playing 17.9 MPG.

Kevin Durant And His Burner Accounts

It is not just the lesser names who have burner accounts, of course. You tend to believe that a lot of players do have them, and one individual who certainly does is Kevin Durant.

Durant was perhaps the first big name to be revealed to have burner accounts. He got exposed when he accidentally tweeted some criticism regarding Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder from his main account. He is a lot more open about it nowadays and admitted he still has burner accounts. NBA insider Shams Charania was also caught up in this burner account mess last year, but he denied that he has any.
