As Grizzlies star Ja Morant eases back into NBA action, fans and analysts across the league are looking back to reflect on his recent scandal.
After flashing a gun on Instagram Live, the young point guard was bombarded with criticism as the NBA eventually handed him an 8-game suspension.
According to ESPN’s Jay Williams, however, the punishment was not nearly enough to fit the crime, and he’s not buying that Morant has learned anything.
“I do believe the NBA missed the mark on his suspension,” said Jay. “I thought he should’ve been suspended for the rest of the regular season without pay, and his return should have been subject to successful counseling from the NBA.”
Being disqualified for the season would have obviously been a massive problem for the Grizzlies, and it would have been a huge response from the NBA.
Whether you find that fitting or not, it’s important to remember that the NBA only fined him based on what they could prove, which is only that he was caught with somebody else’s gun in the video.
Has Ja Really Learned His Lesson?
The only one who knows how Ja Morant is thinking is Morant himself, but there are some doubts that his behavior will actually change.
But if he ever does get himself caught up in drama like this again, the penalties will be extremely severe.
Fortunately, Morant has already stated that he intends to make amends for his recent mistakes.
“Obviously, I’ve made mistakes in the past that cause a lot of negative attention — not only to me, but my family as well, my team, the organization — and I’m completely sorry for that,” said Morant, via ESPN. “So my job now is, like I said, to be more responsible, more smarter, and don’t cause any of that no more.”
The NBA has made its ruling, and Morant has gotten the help he needs. Now all that’s left to do is trust that Ja will make the right decisions from here on out for the sake of his team and the future of his livelihood.
