In the weeks following Ja Morant’s viral Instagram Live video (in which he flashed a gun for his audience), the young star has been ravaged by criticism from all sides and the NBA followed suit with a response.

While Morant has already come out with a public statement on the whole ordeal, he recently spoke about it again in his first press conference since the event.

In it, he apologized once again and accepted full responsibility for his actions.

“Obviously, I’ve made mistakes in the past that cause a lot of negative attention — not only to me, but my family as well, my team, the organization — and I’m completely sorry for that,” said Morant, via ESPN. “So my job now is, like I said, to be more responsible, more smarter, and don’t cause any of that no more.”

As for what’s next, Morant’s trip to a counseling center in Florida may help him deal with his anger better but he admitted it’s going to take some time before he’s truly in a place he wants to be.

“Right now for me, it’s just keeping the main thing, the main thing and continuing to go through my process of becoming a better me,” Morant said. “I feel like if I do that, not only will it help me, but it’ll help everybody around me as well.”

How Will This Scandal Impact Morant’s Future?

As one of the future faces of the league, Morant’s importance to the NBA, and to the Grizzlies is impossible to quantify and he nearly jeopardized that in a single moment on social media.

No doubt, it was a major hit to his reputation and his brand, but it’s nothing he can’t recover from given enough time and dedication.

Even now, many still come to his defense.

“Y’all saw what’s going on,” said Kyrie Irving on Ja. “We don’t have to go into 12ski. We don’t even have to go into that. We don’t have to go into that because 12ski’s not the only one that’s dealt with real-life circumstances. He’s not the only one. He won’t be the only one.”

In the aftermath of a huge mistake, you have to give Ja credit for being open and honest about it. No matter what you believe about the sincerity of his apologies, he knows that actions speak louder than words and it’s clear he intends to make amends for his sins as quickly as he can.
