Charles Barkley is one of the most hilarious people in NBA media, there are very few fans that don’t love his candid sense of humor.
During March Madness, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith cover those college games, and it leads to some hilarious conversation. In a recent clip that went viral, Barkley claimed he used to wash his jersey by showering in it, which led to the rest of the panel eventually laughing hysterically.
Charles Barkley had an, uh, interesting way of washing his jersey back in the day. 😂 pic.twitter.com/AbmQSydRPs

“Shout-out to all the trainers, and the guys who do all the uniforms,” Barkley said. “To get these uniforms cleaned up and everything, I’m so old, we used to take a shower in our uniforms.”
Kenny Smith had to step in, saying, “Time out. There’s no era where you did this. You’re making this up. There’s no way that you were supposed to wash your uniform. You’re making this up. No one in their right mind has ever done that.”
But Charles Barkley didn’t back down, retorting with: “When I first got to the NBA, we flew commercial. So when you played the night before, and flew the next morning, when was you exactly going to get your uniform clean? You had to wash your uniform yourself. So, after the game, when you got to your room, you took a shower in your uniform and dried it, and dropped it on the commercial plane the next day.”
Clark Kellogg stepped in saying, “You can clean your uniform without showering in it.” Kenny Smith was still in disbelief, adding, “You don’t need to have it on.”
But Charles Barkley has never accepted he was wrong that easily in his life, and he doubled down: “No, but it’s easier to do it that way.”
It’s safe to say this is one of the more hilarious exchanges Barkley and Smith have had, everyone on the panel was laughing too much by the end of it. And while it’s true that modern NBA players enjoy much better amenities, this story from Barkley seems a bit far-fetched.
How Likely Is It That Charles Barkley Is Telling The Truth About This?
NBA teams are worth billions of dollars today, and players have access to the latest technology and brilliant facilities, they even fly on private jets. But in the 1980s, the league was struggling financially, and the money wasn’t that great. Still, at the professional level, they did stay in hotels and had access to laundry services, so it’s hard to believe this happened to Barkley during his time with the Sixers.
It may be that Charles was remembering his time in college instead. College programs today have just as much money as NBA teams in some cases, but it’s easy to imagine that not being the case in the early 1980s. But the availability of laundry services aside, it would be fitting if Barkley had been doing this on his thinking that it’s the norm for everyone. He truly is one of a kind.
