Isaiah Thomas has not played in the NBA since 2022, when he was signed for a part of the season by the Charlotte Hornets in March.

The Hornets have been quite disappointing, and Isaiah Thomas became a free agent before the start of the 2022-23 season. He is among a few former All-Stars that cannot find a place in the league anymore, but he’s not ruling out an NBA return.

“Steady on the grind. Staying ready. Hopefully, something coming on my phone soon,” Thomas tells Heavy Sports. “But you know me, I’m just taking care of the family and staying in the gym. I’m just staying ready and staying as positive as I can during this situation. I still want to play in the NBA, so I’m going to work for that until I can’t.”

This is a pretty optimistic take from Isaiah, he believes he has what it takes to play in the NBA still. Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard have also been left without teams despite having distinguished careers, but Isaiah does seem more likely to get an NBA deal than the other two. His determination to return to the court has been reported on, and now it seems like it might have paid off.

Isaiah Thomas Reveals He Has Been Talking To Teams As He Anticipates An NBA Return

When he was last in the league, Isaiah Thomas averaged 8.3 points playing just 12.9 minutes per game in 17 appearances for the Charlotte Hornets. He still has what it takes to score, although his defense is a question mark (not that he agrees). His interest in a run doesn’t mean much without teams thinking he can contribute to them. But if he is to be believed, there is interest at the moment.

“I’ve been talking to two teams the last couple of weeks,” Thomas said. “Hopefully, they decide by the end of this week or early next week. But I’ve been in contact with teams monthly.

“So that’s the thing with me, like, I know it’s close; I just have to find the team that wants me to be on board and me to help in any situation possible. My agency and my representatives are just trying to figure it out. Obviously, there’s a lot of overseas interest, but that’s just not even on my mind right now, so I don’t even want to dip into that. My ultimate goal is to have an NBA jersey. That’s all I want.”

Dwight Howard went abroad, and interest is always high in former NBA stars. Isaiah could make great money playing in Europe or Asia, but he wants to be back in the NBA. If a contending team can sign him to be a scoring option off the bench, there could be another final NBA run in Isaiah Thomas’ future.
