Zion Williamson may be young and still a ‘new’ talent in the NBA, but the New Orleans Pelicans star knows the game too well.
During the All-Star Weekend, the former No. 1 overall pick talked about the players he considered underappreciated in NBA history.
“I would say players like Dennis Johnson, George Gervin and David Thompson. I would say players like that.”
Zion also talked about the ones he admired growing up, revealing that his mother gave him the best reference of players from the 80s and 90s.
“When I first started playing the game of basketball, I asked my mom, ‘what players should I look up or who should I watch?’ And she told me Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Mike [Jordan]. In that order. I watched Magic and I was like, ‘I like his game.’ I watched Larry… That’s a bad dude. And then when it got to 23, it’s hard to watch that and not say, ‘man, I want to get to that level one day. I want to be able to do something like that when I get older, so I gotta go with those 3.”
Williamson learned so well from these, as his game has a couple of things that Magic and Jordan used to show on the court. As for Larry, perhaps he learned a little bit about trash-talking, as he recently showed while talking about facing Ja Morant in the NBA postseason.
Zion Williamson Names The Best Player In The NBA Right Now
Williamson has been very active in naming players from the past and current eras. As an injured player, he’s had the chance to talk about the current state of the league and even went on to say who is the best player in the NBA right now, picking Nikola Jokic.
Zion really knows ball, and these statements show that he was and still is a student of the game. The player learned a couple of things from the best, and the Pelicans hope that he can take all of that to the court once he returns from an injury that reaggravated recently.
