The Dallas Mavericks are playing out this season with Kyrie Irving on the roster, but a big question remains to be answered for both parties.
According to one NBA executive, they could be leading the race to re-sign Kyrie this summer.
“I’m not sure where else he goes,” this executive told Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. “Unless the Los Angeles Lakers don’t re-sign [D’Angelo Russell], they can’t get to Kyrie’s max.”
When Kyrie asked out of the Brooklyn Nets a couple of days ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, he did so with a goal in mind: going to a team that could pay him as much as he wanted.
“Kyrie’s goal in pushing out of Brooklyn was to get his rights with a team willing to pay him,” one source said. “Dallas is where he’ll want to be.”
Pincus explains that only a couple of franchises are in a position to give Kyrie $46.9 million (maxing out at $201.7 over four), including the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. This only leaves a couple of options open for the point guard, and the Mavs look like the clear favorite to keep him for the long term.

Even after he landed in Dallas, many reports suggested that Kyrie wasn’t done with the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James reportedly wants them to push for Kyrie in the 2023 free agency, but if the Lakers decide to take the D’Angelo Russell route, there won’t be much to do for the 17-time NBA champions.
A reunion between the two former Cleveland Cavaliers is in the cards, but time will tell what direction the Lakers take and if that can please LeBron James, who is still trying to win another championship in Los Angeles.
Whether it’s with Kyrie or not, the King will continue chasing that 5th NBA championship until his son Bronny comes to the league and he follows him to whatever team drafts the interesting prospect.
