76ers hooper Mac McClung, the reigning slam dunk champion, has already committed to defending his title at the 2024 All-Star weekend. But apparently, he’s also already got a few opponents in mind.
In a recent conversation with Steve Serby of the New York Post, McClung explained why Zion Williamson is his pick to bring more eyes to next year’s dunk contest.
βI would love that,β said Mac. “I think heβs an amazing dunker and amazing player, I think it would build up the fan base, and it would just be a great time.β

McClung’s performance at the dunk contest this year was impressive, to say the least. Besides a ridiculous level of difficulty for his dunks, he completed them all on the first attempt. But still, despite McClung’s dominating performance, many fans were turned off by the lack of stars participating in the event.
Obviously, adding Zion Williamson would fix that. When healthy, Z is one of the highest fliers in basketball, and the strength/power with his slams always adds an extra layer of excitement to the building.
Zion alone, however, might still not be enough to save the dunk contest. The event overall has seen a major dip in quality over the years, and neither fans nor players seem to enjoy the current format.
NBA All-Star Weekend Is In Rough Shape For The Future
Of course, it wasn’t just the dunk contest that fell flat for some fans. Sadly, it may have been the best event of the entire weekend, which really says a lot about the state of the game right now.
While many opinions have been raised about how to fix the All-Star event, there is a sense that the NBA may just be better off getting rid of the show altogether.
This year’s All-Star weekend saw record-low viewership, and Sunday’s main headline game was an embarrassment for everyone involved. If Mac McClung is really the best we can do, it might be a sign that the All-Star competitions just aren’t built for the modern game.
Nevertheless, the NBA will keep trying to make it work, and reviving the Slam Dunk contest might be the best place to start. The league should call Zion now and begin pitching the case for his participation.
