Kyrie Irving is arguably the biggest name not drafted by the Dallas Mavericks to join the team after the Mavs traded for him in a sensational move earlier today.

Irving joins Luka Doncic in Dallas to form arguably the best backcourt in the NBA right now, with both players being named All-Star starters this season. Given the incredible load Luka has been carrying this season, Irving’s addition is much-needed to ensure Doncic sustains his level of play throughout the season and especially in the playoffs.

Fans are eagerly waiting to see Irving in action for the Mavs. Unfortunately, fans won’t see him play against the Utah Jazz tomorrow night as Irving is expected to make his debut on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kyrie Irving is expected to arrive for a physical on Monday in Dallas and travel to make his Mavericks debut vs. the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday (10 PM ET, ESPN), source tells ESPN.

Luka Doncic is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and had already been ruled out of the game against the Jazz. If Irving is debuting against the Clippers, Doncic is likely to also return to the lineup and start the new era of the Mavericks together.

Are The Mavericks Contenders After This Trade?

The Dallas Mavericks were being criticized the entire year for being completely dependent on Luka. They are 0-7 with Doncic being ruled out of a game but managed to win a game because of an electric Spencer Dinwiddie performance after Luka got hurt in the first quarter against the Suns.

Despite the over-reliance on Luka, the Mavs have managed to keep their record above .500. Irving and Doncic are going to be a defensive nightmare for any team they come up against. Teams can’t overload on Luka anymore as Irving is arguably the best bailout option for a co-star in the NBA.

There are valid defensive concerns around the team, especially with Dorian Finney-Smith departing, but the Mavs have indicated they will be making more trades in the next few days. If they can reinforce their defense with a bargain addition, the Mavericks could genuinely be among the favorites to come out of an incredibly competitive Western Conference.
