The Los Angeles Lakers are trying to save their season one win at a time. Most would consider the Lakers making the play-in an achievement given how they started the season. However, Anthony Davis has made it clear that the team is aiming for the 6th seed at the minimum and aren’t looking forward to the play-in.

The Lakers are currently 2.5 games behind the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves. Given how tightly packed the West is, the Lakers could be a run away from even competing for the fourth seed, as they are just 3.5 games behind the Clippers in that spot.

The Lakers are a winning streak away from being .500 for the first time this season. They are on a 2-game winning streak ahead of a week that is bound to be historic, as LeBron James chases down Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record. James is expected to break the record against the Thunder after the Lakers’ next game against the Pelicans, who just lost their 10th consecutive game to the Mavericks.
If the Lakers can stay healthy through the second half of the season, they have to be looked at as one of the strongest teams in this weirdly compact West. More trades would definitely help them, but the roster as presently constricted could make the playoffs. The Lakers are 17-10 in their 27 games since January, showing that this team can be among the top-tier teams in the West.
