Michael Jordan is inarguably among the two greatest NBA players to ever live. While that distinction was relatively unanimous, the rise of LeBron James has created a serious debate over whether Jordan’s prime holds up enough to outduel LeBron’s 20-year run of dominance in the NBA. Regardless, MJ is still the most influential player in league history for everything he achieved and the commercial boom he gave the sport.

Tomorrow is February 3rd, and it is an interesting date. It’ll be denoted as 2/3/23, which is basically back-to-back 23s. With this extremely unique date coming our way, ESPN has decided to pay tribute to the legend that popularized the 23 jersey number in MJ by celebrating the date as ‘Michael Jordan day.’

ESPN will feature content and highlights of Michael Jordan across multiple studio shows tomorrow for Michael Jordan Day (2/3/23)

Recognizing and appreciating greatness should be a regular theme in sports shows. However, many fans are not happy with the timing of this special, as it comes in the week that LeBron is set to become the leading scorer in NBA history.

Are There Ulterior Motives Behind The Celebration?

Fans can go blue discussing whether this celebration is a larger ploy by ESPN to continue discussing the MJ vs. LeBron debate in a very notable week of LBJ’s career. However, no conspiracy could bring the calendar to align on such a unique date which will be linked to MJ.

The LeBron and MJ debate is so pervasive that sports fans and media can no longer appreciate one without bringing up the other. Obviously, there will be some debates that paint MJ in a better light than LeBron, but that doesn’t mean the entire celebration was designed to minimize LBJ’s achievements. Giving flowers to legends of the game for what they achieved should be a norm, instead of always comparing their achievements to other players.
