Luka Doncic suffered an ankle injury against the Phoenix Suns last week but fortunately for the Dallas Mavericks, he only missed one game. Doncic returned on Monday night and he quickly dispelled any fears that the ankle might still be bothering him.

Luka had 24 points just in the first quarter against the Detroit Pistons and he finished with 53 points to go with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Doncic was also going at it with the Pistons assistant coach Jerome Allen all game and there were some words exchanged between them with time winding down in the fourth quarter.

The Slovenian was asked about it in the postgame interview and he said isn’t going to back down when someone starts talking trash to him.

"They didn't like when I chirped back… if they're gonna chirp at me, I'm gonna chirp back. I ain't scared."

“It was the assistant coach, he’s trying to chirp in the first quarter. So, they didn’t like when I chirped back, they said ‘Play basketball.’ If they’re gonna chirp at me, I’m gonna chirp back. I ain’t scared.”

It is never a good idea to get Doncic riled up and he made them pay here. It is the 4th time this season Luka has hit the 50-point mark and the only real concern is that it took this huge performance from him to get past the Pistons.

Luka Doncic Now Has Four Of The Six Highest-Scoring Games For The Mavericks

Provided Luka plays his whole career in Dallas, it’d be safe to say that he’d hold basically every franchise record. This latest performance meant he now has 4 of the 6 highest-scoring games in Mavericks history and he is just 23 years old.

The top 10 might just be full of Doncic games by the time he is done playing and that is saying something considering how great Dirk Nowitzki was. The problem though is that you are ultimately not going to win championships playing this kind of basketball.

The Mavericks need to surround him with better players and there were reports that Luka asked for the roster to be upgraded, although he stated that wasn’t the case. The Mavericks were reportedly one of the teams interested in Bojan Bogdanovic and the Croatian would have impressed them once again, as he scored 29 points in this one. He’d be a fine addition to the roster but time is running out for the Mavs to make a move.
